Volumetric vs. mass: which to choose

It is the decision that most defines your filler’s accuracy and versatility. Understanding the difference between measuring volume and measuring mass saves you money and trouble.

Two ways to measure what comes out

Modern technology replaces the old level tank with electronic flowmeters: the product travels from a pump to the filling valve through closed piping, without oxidising. The difference between the two options is what they measure: one measures the volume passing through, the other the mass.

Electromagnetic flowmeter (volumetric)

It measures volume using the conductivity of the liquid (Faraday law). It is an excellent option for watery, conductive products — many agrochemicals, detergents, acids — with very good accuracy, no moving parts and no maintenance, at a lower cost. Its limit: it does not work with non-conductive products such as oils or solvents.

Coriolis mass flowmeter

It measures the mass flowing directly and does not depend on conductivity, so it works for almost any product: non-conductive, viscous, foaming or high value. It is the most universal option and the most accurate in large containers; in exchange, it means a bigger investment.

How to decide in practice

The rule is simple: if your product is watery and conductive, the electromagnetic option is usually enough and more economical; if it is non-conductive, highly varied or high value, the Coriolis mass option is the safest choice. At BSC accuracy ranges from ± 0.2 % in small containers to ± 0.03 % in 20-litre containers, and we offer both variants (L-Mag electromagnetic and L-Mass mass). For drums and IBCs there is also filling by weight, with a scale.

Frequently asked questions

Which one is more accurate?+

Both are very accurate; the choice is defined by the product, not by accuracy. At BSC they range from ± 0.2 % to ± 0.03 % depending on the container.

Can I fill oil with an electromagnetic flowmeter?+

No: oil is not conductive, so in that case the Coriolis mass flowmeter is the right choice.

Can I have both technologies?+

BSC offers both variants (L-Mag electromagnetic and L-Mass mass); the ideal is to decide based on the product you will fill.
